Daily Highlights

Day 1 – Arrival & First Ride

(Thursday)

Your adventure begins at Goegap Nature Reserve, just south of Springbok, with arrival at 12:00 pm.

Lunch: 12:30 – 13:30

After the initial participant introduction and briefing we head out for our first ride, introducing you to the unique plants and flowers of Namaqualand. Cycling through this natural landscape is the perfect way to settle in, stretch the legs, and get comfortable on the bike.

This is the shortest ride of the adventure at approximately 20 km.

Guests arriving closer to 17:00 will miss the afternoon ride but will join the group for the evening dinner and welcome briefing around the fire.

Day 2 – Exploring the Flower Fields

(Friday)

Breakfast is served between 07:30 and 08:30 (coffee, rusks, and a hearty breakfast).

We then set out with snacks, water, packed lunches, and the support vehicle for a full day of cycling through Goegap Nature Reserve, one of the best areas to experience the Namaqua flower bloom.

The day is spent riding, observing, photographing, and quietly absorbing the “language of nature.” The support vehicle carries gazebos and picnic blankets so we can pause comfortably when needed.

Day two covers approximately 45 km, but distances are flexible depending on the group’s pace and preferences. If anyone becomes tired, the support vehicle is always available.

This is not a race — it’s about finding a rhythm: riding, pausing, photographing, and soaking in the extraordinary surroundings.

We usually return around 15:00, leaving time to relax before dinner.

18:00 – 22:00: Campfire dinner, storytelling, and time to unwind beneath the desert stars.

Day 3 – Deeper into Namaqualand

(Saturday)

Breakfast is again served between 07:30 and 08:30, followed by another day of exploration.

Today’s ride takes us deeper into the flower landscapes, where we often encounter more wildlife alongside the spectacular floral displays.

With gazebos and picnic blankets available for shade breaks, the day flows naturally between cycling, photography, and simply enjoying the stillness and beauty of the region.

Expect 3–5 hours on the bike, covering 30–50 km depending on the group and the number of scenic stops along the way.

This is a rare and immersive experience. The vastness of Namaqualand, combined with the colours of the flowers and the presence of wildlife, makes these rides truly unforgettable.

Day 4 – Final Ride & Departure

(Sunday)

Sunday morning is flexible. Guests may choose to enjoy a final ride among the flowers, go for a short hike, or simply relax and savour the last moments of the adventure.

The trip concludes after brunch, with a suggested departure time between 13:00 and 15:00.

Only 8 rooms (2 x single beds, please bring your own bedding) are available – Guests beyond the room limit will need to bring their own tent, mattress, and bedding.  We all use male and female ablution facilities. Regardless of where you sleep, all meals are included, along with freshly brewed coffee, comforting tea, and a well-earned glass of wine each evening. A dedicated support vehicle will accompany us throughout the journey, so you can ride at your own pace, knowing help is always close by. This is your time to relax, explore, and fully immerse ourselves in the rhythm of nature.

E-bikes are the next best thing – a true equalizer on the trail.
They bridge the gap between age, fitness levels, and experience, allowing everyone to ride together and enjoy the journey. Whether you’re easing back into cycling or simply want to go further with less strain, an e-bike makes the adventure more accessible – without taking away the joy of the ride.

No experience? No problem. We’ll guide you through the basics of riding on different terrains to build your confidence and comfort.

If you’re over 70 or have any health concerns, please get in touch with us beforehand – we’ll help assess whether this experience is the right fit for you and ensure your safety and enjoyment throughout the tour.

Please note: Our camp is equipped with solar lighting, gas-powered hot water heaters, and a generator specifically for charging e-bike batteries. We aim to keep things simple, sustainable, and focused on the beauty of the outdoors.

Cycling Terrain & Route Conditions

The cycling routes within Goegap Nature Reserve, are on a desert plateau approximately 1,000 metres above sea level. The terrain forms part of the wider Namaqualand landscape and shares many characteristics with the nearby Tankwa Karoo — vast open spaces, dramatic skies, and quiet gravel roads that stretch through the flower-filled plains.

Most of the riding takes place on gravel roads and jeep tracks, with rocky or sandy sections that add to the authentic desert riding experience.

The terrain consists of rolling gravel plateaus with a series of gentle climbs and descents. Typical climbs gain between 100 and 250 metres of elevation, with gradients generally ranging from 3% to 6%.

The riding is moderately challenging but very achievable, especially with the relaxed pace of the tour and the presence of the support vehicle. Riders are encouraged to cycle at their own rhythm, stopping frequently to enjoy the scenery, photograph the flowers, and simply experience the quiet beauty of the desert landscape.

The Cape Cycling Adventures Namaqua Flower Cycling Adventure is rated Moderate (Level 2–3) on a regular Mountain Bike

For riders who prefer extra assistance — particularly on the gentle climbs an e-bike is the great equalizer.  e-bike rentals are available on selected tour dates. Using an e-bike allows riders of varying fitness levels to comfortably keep pace with the group while still fully enjoying the cycling experience.

Whether riding a traditional bicycle or an e-bike, the focus of the adventure is not speed or performance, but rather immersing yourself in the landscape, the flowers, and the shared experience of exploring Namaqualand by bike.

Recommended Bicycles

The routes are best suited to the following bikes:

  • Gravel bikes
Mountain bikes (hardtail or dual suspension)
E-bikes (rentals available on selected dates)

Tyres suitable for gravel and mixed terrain are recommended due to the occasional rocky or sandy sections.

E-Bike Advice

If you’re considering joining with an e-bike, here are a few key recommendations:

  • Tyres suitable for gravel and mixed terrain are recommended due to the occasional rocky or sandy sections.

  • Your e-bike should be capable of covering at least 50 km per charge to keep up with daily ride distances.

Getting There

Each participant is responsible for making their own way to the starting point at Goegap Nature Reserve, just outside Springbok, Northern Cape.

For those traveling from further afield, it is possible to charter a private flight to Springbok Airport, located just 500 metres from the reserve’s entrance gate.

Please note: You will not be able to bring your e-bike on the flight. However, you can ship your bike to Springbok using Courier Guy and collect it upon arrival. We recommend arranging this well in advance to ensure it arrives on time.

With group bookings special transport can be arranged at an additional cost.

Level of Experience

This is not a race – it’s a cycling journey through nature, focused on enjoyment, exploration, and connection with the landscape.

While the route includes a variety of terrains – such as sandy stretches, rocky paths, sections with water damage, and some steep ascents and descents – there’s no need to be an expert rider. We’ll provide basic guidance and riding techniques to help you navigate these areas safely.

As long as you ride slowly, mindfully, and with care, you’ll manage just fine.

For those with limited fitness or technical skill, or for older participants, an e-bike is the ideal option. It offers extra support when you need it most, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed.

In such cases, a full refund will be issued less a 10% administrative fee to cover transaction and booking operational costs. Examples include but are not limited to war, terrorism, major health risks, or natural disasters. You are advised to consult us before proceeding with cancellation under this clause.

  1. Alterations and Cancellations by Us

A 10% administrative fee will apply in such cases to cover processing overrides.

Use of this device for any non-emergency reasons, including but not limited to fatigue, discomfort, or logistical convenience, is strictly prohibited.

In the event that an emergency evacuation (including but not limited to emergency vehicle extraction or helicopter airlift) is initiated by emergency services for a participant, the specific participant receiving care will be held personally liable for all costs incurred.

These expenditures should be recovered directly through the participant’s mandatory medical insurance policy (as required in Clause 5). Weather Policy

Purpose

Cape Cycling Adventures (CCA) is committed to providing enjoyable outdoor experiences while maintaining the highest standards of participant safety. Weather conditions are continuously monitored before and during every activity. The Lead Guide has the authority to modify, suspend, or cancel any activity whenever weather conditions present an unacceptable level of risk.

Participant safety will always take precedence over the planned itinerary.

Weather Monitoring

Weather forecasts shall be reviewed:

  • 72 hours before the activity.
  • 24 hours before the activity.
  • On the morning of departure.
  • Continuously throughout the activity using reliable weather forecasts, radar applications, and on-site observations.

Where possible, participants will receive an updated weather forecast before the activity.

Weather Cancellation Criteria

An activity will not commence if any of the following conditions are present or forecast during the planned riding period:

  • Sustained wind speeds exceeding 30 km/h.
  • Heavy rainfall forecast exceeding 10 mm during the activity.
  • Thunderstorms or lightning forecast.
  • Extreme temperatures exceeding 38°C.
  • A Very High, Severe, or higher fire danger rating.
  • Flooded river crossings or unsafe water levels.
  • Any other environmental condition that, in the judgement of the Lead Guide, presents an unacceptable safety risk.

The Lead Guide has the authority to cancel or postpone an activity even if the above thresholds have not been reached.

Scenario 1 – Light Rain or Passing Showers

Light rain does not normally prevent the activity from proceeding.

Modern e-bikes are designed to operate safely in light rain, provided that trail conditions remain safe.

The following procedures apply:

  • Participants will be advised to wear lightweight waterproof jackets.
  • Guides will reduce riding speeds where necessary.
  • Extra caution will be exercised on wet surfaces, bridges, loose gravel, and steep descents.
  • The itinerary may be adjusted to avoid the heaviest rainfall.
  • Indoor activities, such as wine tastings or refreshment stops, may be extended while waiting for passing showers.
  • Guides will continuously assess trail conditions and participant comfort throughout the ride.

Scenario 2 – Heavy Rain or Severe Weather

If heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, flooding, or deteriorating trail conditions make cycling unsafe, the Lead Guide will immediately suspend the riding activity.

Depending on the circumstances, one or more of the following options will be implemented:

Option 1 – Wine & Wildlife Vehicle Experience

Participants may continue the experience in the CCA support vehicle.

This alternative includes:

  • Guided wildlife viewing.
  • Visits to participating wine estates.
  • Scheduled meals and refreshments.
  • Interpretation by the guide throughout the experience.

This option allows guests to enjoy the highlights of the adventure while remaining safe and comfortable.

Option 2 – Modified Route

Where practical, the guide may substitute sections of the planned route with safer alternatives that avoid hazardous terrain while maintaining the overall experience.

Option 3 – Rescheduling

Where guest travel arrangements permit, the activity may be rescheduled to another available date, subject to availability.

Option 4 – Cancellation

If weather conditions make it unsafe to operate and no suitable alternative or rescheduling option is available, the activity will be cancelled.

Any refunds, credits, or rescheduling arrangements will be managed in accordance with the current Cape Cycling Adventures Booking Terms and Conditions. Participants will be informed of the available options as soon as reasonably practicable.

Weather Changes During the Ride

Weather conditions can change rapidly.

If conditions deteriorate during the activity, the Lead Guide may:

  • Stop the group in a safe location.
  • Modify or shorten the route.
  • Seek shelter if appropriate.
  • Return participants to the support vehicle.
  • Suspend or terminate the activity.
  • Activate the Emergency Response Plan if required.

Participants are required to follow all guide instructions immediately.

Participant Responsibilities

Participants are expected to:

  • Dress appropriately for forecast weather conditions.
  • Carry a waterproof jacket when requested.
  • Bring sufficient drinking water.

For your Cape Cycling Adventures participants, this tyre pressure guide is simple, practical, and easy to follow.

Under 60 kg1.2–1.4 bar (18–20 psi)1.0–1.2 bar (15–18 psi)0.8–1.0 bar (12–15 psi)
60–75 kg1.4–1.6 bar (20–23 psi)1.2–1.4 bar (18–20 psi)0.9–1.1 bar (13–16 psi)

Over 90 kg1.8–2.1 bar (26–30 psi)1.6–1.8 bar (23–26 psi)1.1–1.3 bar (16–19 psi)

General Guidelines

  • Lower pressure provides more grip and comfort on rough terrain.
  • Higher pressure rolls faster on tar and smooth gravel.
  • Never reduce pressure so much that the tyre can easily hit the rim on rocks or sharp edges.
  • Check tyre pressure before every ride, as temperature changes can affect pressure.
  • For e-bikes carrying luggage or heavier riders, use the upper end of the recommended range.

For Your Rides

Based on the terrain you typically ride around Worcester, Rawsonville, Slanghoek, and the game reserve:

  • Winelands & Wildlife Ride: 1.4–1.6 bar (20–23 psi)
  • Rocky gravel roads: 1.5–1.8 bar (22–26 psi)
  • Soft sand: 0.9–1.2 bar (13–18 psi) (reinflate as soon as you return to firmer ground)
