In the course of exploring my own path, I came across a small but profoundly impactful book — The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It resonated deeply with me. In the story, a young man named Santiago sets off on a journey in search of treasure, and along the way, he encounters an older man who becomes his employer, mentor, and friend.
This mentor shares the five guiding pillars by which he lives — principles that have stayed with me ever since:
-
- Faith, trust, and acceptance
- Connection and authentic communication
- Letting go by surrendering control
- Giving and contributing in meaningful ways
- Exploration, curiosity, and travel
- Faith, trust, and acceptance
At different times in our lives, certain pillars may rise in importance. The art lies in knowing which one to lean into more fully in each season, while still holding them all as part of a greater whole. For me, this balance has become a quiet compass — a guide to living a life of depth, purpose, and presence.
